Denk and Peare soar to victory in the Division 1 pole vault

The Division 1 pole vault competition was expected to be very good, but spectators at Jesse Owens Stadium were in for a treat on Saturday afternoon.  The boy’s pole vault was first, and sophomore Matt Peare from North Canton Hoover made sure that the crowd was not disappointed.  He cleared 14 feet on his 2nd attempt, 14 feet 6 inches and 15 feet on his first attempt, 15 feet 4 on his second attempt, 15 feet 8 inches on his first attempt, 16 feet on his third attempt, 16 feet 4 inches on his second attempt which was his winning vault.  His vault puts him tied for sixth on the all time State Tournament pole vault performance list.

Not to be outdone, North Royalton senior Kristen Denk put on a show in the girl’s pole vault.  She cleared on her first attempt at 12 feet, 12 feet 4 inches, 12 feet 8 inches and 13 feet.  She then cleared 13 feet 6 inches on her second attempt, which was her winning vault.  Her vault set the State Meet record, the Division 1 State record and the Jesse Owens Stadium record.  It is the highest vault for a girl in any division in OHSAA history.

Congratulations to both Matt and Kristen on great performances.

An epic run by Ryan Adams to break an epic record

Ryan Adams of CVCA won the Division 2 1600 meters in an all-time Division 2 State record of 4:07.12.  His time broke the record of the great Scott Fry of Sandusky Perkins that was set back in 1985 (4:08.03).  It was a record that Adams has been eyeing for awhile according to former Cortland Maplewood coach Ted Rupe.  It was evident that Adams left everything out on the track on Saturday.  For a long time after the race, he was struggling to even stand up.  Congratulations to Ryan on a very gutsy performance and a record that may end up standing for a long time.

St. Thomas Aquinas Girls and Warren JFK Boys win 2015 Division 3 State Titles

The two teams that won the Division 3 State titles this year both won for the first time in their school’s history.  St. Thomas Aquinas girls took home the title with 69 points.  A great team effort, winning 3 relays and a lot of great individual performances.  The JFK Boys won the title with 48 points, which were all scored by two athletes.  Chad Zallow won the 110 Hurdles, the 100 and the 300 hurdles. Jacob Coates won the 200 and was second in the 100.

Congratulations to both teams on a great accomplishment!
