Maplewood’s Richards takes home another state championship

It has become an annual event at the OHSAA State Track Championships for Cortland Maplewood’s Caleigh Richards to stand atop the podium.  As a freshman she won the 3200, as a sophomore she won the 1600, and now as a junior she again won the 3200.  Richards sat in 2nd through the first half of the race, with New London’s Reese Landis taking the lead at the midway point. As Landis rounded the first curve on the fifth lap, she fell to the side of the track and did not finish.  From that point, Richards took over the lead and never relented.  She gradually started pulling away from the rest of the competitors, and really broke away in the last half mile.  Her winning time of 10:53 outdistanced the rest of the field by nearly 20 seconds.  As a junior, she will return to try and make it 4 years in a row with a state title.  Congratulations Caleigh on a great race.
