The division 1 girls 4×800 was expected to be a very fast and competitive race, and it lived up to expectations.
Beavercreek got out to a large lead after the first two legs, but in the third leg, Thomas Worthington sophomore Carina Napoleon made an impressive run to get her team from 10th right back into the front of the pack.
She then handed off to her sister Gia, and we were about to witness the matchup in the anchor leg that so many had anticipated. Napoleon and Madison Martinez of Gahanna Lincoln. Napoleon led for most of the 800 meters, but with 150 meters to go Martinez started moving up on Napoleon’s outside shoulder. When they hit the homestretch it was nearly a dead heat. At 50 meters Martinez surged by Napoleon, and it looked like Gahanna Lincoln would repeat as champions in the 4×800. However, with a gutsy final push, Napoleon managed to out-lean Martinez at the finish line. It was a race that saw four teams run under 9 minutes. Thomas Worthington’s winning time was 8:55.85 and Gahanna Lincoln finished in 8:55.90.
