Dublin Coffman’s Abby Steiner flirts with 2 state records

At last year’s State Track and Field championships, Dublin Coffman’s Abby Steiner made herself known.  As only a freshman, she place 2nd in the 100 meters and 1st in the 200 meters.  It wasn’t just her place that was impressive, but her times (11.89 and 23.96).  So going into this year’s championships, it is safe to say that there was quite a bit of expectation for her.  Sometimes athletes find it hard to live up to lofty expectations, but for Steiner it is so far so good.  In the 100 meter semi-finals she blazed down the track to a time of 11.60, which was a new Jesse Owens Stadium record.  That time missed the all-time division 1 state record (11.59 by Khalilah Carpenter of Brookhaven in 2000) by only one-hundredth of a second.  Just minutes after that in the 4×200 relay, Steiner got the final exchange and was behind by close to 30 meters.  No problem.  She ran what looked to be about as perfect a curve as can be run and blew down the homestretch to grab first place for the lady shamrocks.  And to finish off her day, she nearly broke another state record in the 200 meter semi-final with a time of 23.75 (state record is 23.65 set by Aareon Payne of Beaumont in 2007).  Needless to say, I think everyone will be watching to see what this super sophomore does tomorrow in the division 1 state finals.
