2018 OHSAA State Track and Field Championships Day 1

The first day of the 2018 OHSAA State Track and Field Championships was highlighted by the Division 1 4×800 meter relay, and by a familiar site in the Divison 1 Girls sprints (Abby Steiner breaking records).

The Division 1 Girls 4×800 was slated to be a very competitive and fast race, and it lived up to the billing.  The ladies from Gahanna Lincoln crushed the state record by over 3 seconds in bringing home the victory with a time of 8:53.49.  In doing so, they established themselves as the fastest girls 4×800 relay in the country this year, and lead 7 other teams in the race to times of under 9:10.  The quartet was made up of Junior Shynae Dias, Senior Allison Groves, Senior Claire Steigerwald, and Junior Madison Martinez.

In the boys 4×800 in D1, it was Wadsworth who captured the gold with another US #1 time for 2018 (7:39.05).  They also lead what was a very competitive and fast race, with 4 other teams running under 7:50.  The winning relay was made up of Senior Josiah Sovine, Senior Nick Miller, Junior Kai Wagner and Senior Gabe Szalay.

Something that has become a bit of a tradition over the past 4 years at the State Meet is Dublin Coffman’s Abby Steiner bringing the crowd to it’s feet with some incredible performances.  Today was no different.  In the semi-finals of the girls Division 1 100 meter dash, Abby ran an incredible 11.47 seconds.  The time broke her own state record that she had set in the regional meet.  And Abby wasn’t done for the day.  In the semi-finals of the 200 meter dash, she again lowered her own state record with a time of 23.17.  We’ll definitely be on record watch when Abby runs again tomorrow in the finals.

There were many great performances on the first days of the 2018 State Track and Field Championships, and there is likely to be many more tomorrow.
